A military Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move follows its own process. Knowing how it works helps you avoid problems and get what you are owed.

Two basic options

  • Government-arranged move: the military arranges a moving company to pack and transport your household goods.
  • Personally procured move (PPM): you handle the move yourself and are reimbursed, potentially keeping the difference if you come in under the government's cost.

Schedule early

PCS season is busy and capacity is tight. Start your arrangements as soon as you have orders, and be flexible on dates if you can.

Document everything

  • Take photos of valuable and electronic items before packing.
  • Keep a copy of your inventory and read it carefully.
  • Note the condition of items and any damage on the paperwork.

Know your weight allowance

Your rank and dependents determine your weight allowance. Exceeding it can mean paying out of pocket, so declutter before the move.

Filing claims

If items are lost or damaged, document them at delivery and file promptly through the proper channel. Keep all paperwork until any claim is fully resolved.

High-value and professional items

Declare high-value articles, and check the rules for professional gear, which is sometimes handled separately from your standard allowance.

The PCS process is well-trodden, but it rewards early scheduling and careful documentation. Treat your inventory and photos as your insurance.
